The Compounding Hours: Why Year Two Feels Ten Times Faster
Year one I billed the same hourly rate as year two but delivered a fraction of the output. The rate did not change. My velocity did. The mechanism is compounding, and it only kicks in after a stubborn plateau most consultants never push through.
The Plateau Problem
For the first twelve to eighteen months of any skill, every hour produces roughly the same output. You learn fast but the learning is linear. Clients see you as a skilled practitioner but not a force multiplier.
Somewhere between month fifteen and month twenty four, the curve bends. Not because you work harder. Because your accumulated context, templates, patterns, and intuition start stacking.
What Stacking Looks Like
Year one Django project: learn models, learn admin, learn deployment, ship in four weeks.
Year two Django project: skip the learning, reach for my template repo, ship in four days. Same rate, same client, one tenth the time. The delta is pure accumulated pattern.
The Template Layer
The compounding mostly lives in templates, not skills. My current template stack includes:
- A Django starter with multi-tenancy, auth, and Stripe already wired
- A Next.js starter with auth, shadcn, and API client generated
- An agent orchestration skill that runs code review on every commit
- A branded document generator for every PLAI deliverable
Each template was painful to build the first time. Each one saves days on every new project.
The Pricing Implication
Hourly billing punishes you for compounding. The faster you get, the less you make. So in year two I stopped quoting hours and started quoting outcomes. A client does not care that my template stack makes the first week of a project invisible. They care that the demo works on Friday.
The Ego Cost
Compounding is unsexy. The year one version of me wanted to tell clients about every hard thing I solved. The year two version of me wants to make the hard things invisible. That is the trade: you lose the credit, you gain the margin. If you are still building your brand, take the credit. If you are scaling, take the margin.
Peter Drucker's old line about efficiency versus effectiveness captures the shift exactly.
What I Tell Other Consultants
Keep working on templates even when nobody is paying you to. The work feels indulgent in the moment and becomes your moat six months later. Consultants who do not invest in templates stay linear forever. The compounding is the whole game in year two and beyond.
